Supporting Your Child’s First Steps into School Life

Toddler Care is often a child’s first experience being away from home and participating in a group environment. At this stage, children begin to notice and respond more actively to others around them.

At Cambridge Pre-school, we support this important transition through a structured yet reassuring programme that helps children gradually adjust to school life while feeling safe, supported and ready to participate.

Our educators understand that every child adjusts differently. Through patient guidance, familiar routines and warm interactions, children learn to navigate new experiences while developing a sense of independence beyond the home.

What Your Child Will Experience

Adjusting to Group Routines and New Environments

For many toddlers, this marks the beginning of learning how to participate in a shared environment with peers and educators.

Children are gently guided through:

  • Predictable daily routines
  • Group transitions and shared activities
  • Familiar schedules that provide comfort and reassurance

Over time, these familiar experiences help children adjust to school life and participate more comfortably in daily routines.

Early Social Interaction and Peer Awareness

At this stage, children begin noticing and responding more actively to others around them.

They gradually learn to:

  • Observe and play alongside peers
  • Participate in simple group activities
  • Respond to social cues and interactions

These early experiences help children become more comfortable in social settings and lay the foundation for future collaboration and friendships.

Emerging Communication and Expression

Toddlers are beginning to communicate more intentionally through gestures, sounds and emerging words.

Our educators support early communication through:

  • Songs and rhymes
  • Storytelling and conversations
  • Interactive group experiences

Through these everyday interactions, children are encouraged to express their needs, follow simple instructions and communicate more confidently with their educators and peers.

Exploration Through Movement and Sensory Play

Toddlers learn best by actively engaging with their environment.

Children participate in activities that encourage:

  • Touch, movement and sensory exploration
  • Simple cause-and-effect discovery
  • Creative and movement-based experiences

These experiences support curiosity, coordination and early thinking skills in age-appropriate ways.

Taking First Steps Towards Independence

As children grow more confident, they begin participating more actively in simple routines and tasks.

With guidance and encouragement, children learn to:

  • Follow simple instructions
  • Participate in tidying up
  • Make simple choices during activities
  • Manage small tasks with support

These everyday experiences help children develop self-reliance while becoming increasingly familiar with daily school life.

Becoming Active Participants in School Life

During Toddler Care, parents often notice children:

  • Adjusting more positively to time spent away from home
  • Participating more willingly in shared activities
  • Communicating needs more clearly
    Managing everyday transitions more independently

This stage helps children develop the emotional readiness and confidence needed for Nursery.

Preparing for Nursery

By the end of Toddler Care, children are typically:
• More engaged in group learning experiences
• Familiar with routines and transitions
• More willing to communicate with educators and peers

These experiences prepare children for the next stage, where they begin participating more actively in structured learning experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions on Toddler Care

My child has never been away from home before. How will you help them settle in?

It is completely normal for toddlers to take time to adjust to a new environment. Our educators work closely with families to ensure a gradual and reassuring transition through consistent routines, warm interactions and responsive care.

Every child settles at their own pace, and we provide the patience and support they need to feel safe, secure and ready to explore.

My child is not talking much yet. Can they still join the programme?

Absolutely. Children develop language skills at different rates. Our Toddler Care programme provides a language-rich environment through songs, stories, conversations and everyday interactions. Educators encourage communication through words, gestures, facial expressions and play, supporting each child’s individual stage of development.

How do you encourage toddlers to interact with other children?

At this age, children are just beginning to develop social awareness. Our educators create opportunities for toddlers to participate in simple group activities, cooperative play and shared experiences that encourage turn-taking, communication and positive interactions with peers.

As children become more familiar with one another, they naturally begin building friendships and learning how to play together.

What does a typical day look like in the Toddler Care programme?

Each day follows a predictable routine that helps children feel secure and settled.

The day includes a balance of:

  • Guided learning experiences
  • Sensory and hands-on play
  • Outdoor exploration and movement
  • Storytelling, songs, and music
  • Meals and rest time
  • Opportunities for free play and social interaction

This balanced routine supports children’s learning while providing the consistency they need at this stage of development.

How will I know how my child is progressing?

We believe that strong partnerships between parents and educators are essential.

Parents receive regular updates on their child’s daily experiences, learning and development through our parent communication app platform. Parent-teacher sessions also provide opportunities to discuss your child’s progress and developmental milestones.

What skills will my child develop before progressing to Nursery?

By the end of Toddler Care, children typically become more comfortable participating in group routines, communicating their needs, exploring independently and interacting with their peers.

These experiences provide a strong foundation for the more structured learning, collaboration and inquiry experiences introduced in Nursery.

How can parents support their child's learning at home?

Simple everyday experiences can make a meaningful difference. Reading together, singing songs, talking about daily routines, encouraging simple choices and allowing your child to practise self-help skills all reinforce the learning that takes place at school.

When home and school work together, children feel more confident and supported as they continue to grow.
